Calamity Cards

Your quick reality check

Organisations are motivated to pay attention to the risks within their operations, but setting up crisis exercises is not always straightforward. Large-scale exercises require a lot of energy, and organisations sometimes lack the time or inspiration.

You don’t always have to go all out to prepare for crises. What you can bring out is the Calamity Cards. This handy card game generates unique scenarios that your team might not immediately consider but could impact your organisation at any time. It allows you and your team to engage in a simple and brief discussion about risks and crises and conduct “what if” conversations to address a scenario. Ideal for various exercises and simulations.

How to play?

Define your objectives

First, choose one or more objectives for your session. What do you specifically want to achieve? Be sure to consider the available time and the number of participants.

Draw two cards

Your first card is a scenario card, featuring a colorful character on the front. This card describes an incident or crisis. To add randomness and extra complexity, draw a context card. Combine both cards and apply the scenario to your organisation.

Pro tip: If you’re feeling ambitious, we challenge you to draw additional context cards!

Achieve your goals

The scene is set and the scenario is on the table. Now it’s time for the fun part. Try to achieve your objectives as a team: see if your crisis plans hold up, whether you can reach key figures within your organisation, draft a reflex communication plan, or map out your stakeholders.

Repeat if necessary

The scenarios are endless. Draw new cards or save your set for next time!
